Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the many skills employed within physiotherapy as part of an integrated approach to the management of pain.

It involves the insertion of single-use, pre-sterilised disposable needles into the skin at specifically chosen acupuncture points.  A number of needles may be used during each treatment, and these are typically left in position for between 20 and 30 minutes before being removed.

What can acupuncture help?

The use of acupuncture for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain is supported by an abundance of scientific research.  It is highly effective at treating tension-type headaches, low back pain and osteoarthritic pain.  It is even more effective when used in conjunction with physiotherapy.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is safe when practised by a Chartered Physiotherapist, because of the strict hygiene guidelines that must be adhered to.

The needles are disposable, pre-sterilised and individually packaged.  They are supplied in guide-tubes, which means that there is no risk of anything touching the needle during the process.

Why use a Physiotherapist

Chartered Physiotherapists are specialists in musculoskeletal pain, and therefore are able to identify patient’s who are most likely to benefit from acupuncture.  We also work in close conjunction with General Practitioners, Consultants, and other healthcare professionals, so can refer on to one of these, if necessary
