Why Should We Set Goals?

Goal setting is an extremely important part of Neuro Physiotherapy.  It is vital that the Therapist knows what you want to achieve from treatment.  This maybe a small goal such as being able to put your own socks on, or something much bigger like going back to driving or work.

Following assessment, I will be able to give you a good idea of what can be achieved and what is reasonable to expect for the future.  Achieving a goal requires hard work from the Therapist and the client, so it is vital that you agree to work at home on any exercises set.  This ‘backs up’ the work we do together in a therapy session and means a more speedy outcome.

Goals are not set in stone and can be adjusted as we go along – often treating key problems such as weakness or spasticity can have such a positive affect that we will achieve more than expected and will need to re-set all our goals to a higher level.

In some cases, goals are aimed at maintaining function and independence rather than gaining anything more.  This is more likely in diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease.

Whatever goal we set, I always approach its achievement in a positive way and whatever situation you’re in I will encourage you to be hopeful for the future.
