Shoulder Stabilisation

This surgical technique involves the reinforcement of the restraining structures of the shoulder. It is usually performed via a minimally invasive approach which is the preferred method as it allows for early mobilisation of the shoulder to minimise the risk of capsular stiffness.

You may have to wear a sling continuously for a period of time (approximately 6 weeks), if the surgeon has to carry out a repair to a Bankart lesion.

Different surgeons have different protocols but usually you will have to keep shoulder movements below shoulder height and avoid rotation of the joint outwards for approximately six weeks. You will often see your surgeon again at this point and they will decide whether you can progress to the next stage of your rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy includes restoring full movement in the joint and strengthening the joint through its full range to give stability in its naturally weaker positions.
