Shoulder Replacement

A prosthetic joint is used to replace an arthritic joint that is causing severe pain. It involves removal of the bone and replacement of the joint surfaces using a combination of metal and plastic.

There are two types of shoulder replacement: standard and a reverse geometry. The latter is used in patients who have a deficient rotator cuff due to torn tendons thus lacking the stability around the joint. The prosthesis is effectively a ‘back to front version’ of the natural joint. This increases the joint stability by increasing the contact surface area of the joint.

Rehabilitation following both types of surgery involves increasing the range of movement, reducing pain and restoring sufficient strength across the joint to complete functional tasks.
