Frozen Shoulder/Adhesive Capsulitis

Physiotherapy aims to treat frozen shoulder by reducing pain and restoring movement in the joint utilising soft tissue techniques to break down scar tissue and joint mobilisations. Should this not help then the next line of treatment is usually a corticosteroid injection.

Frozen Shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitis as it is medically known is a condition affecting the shoulder joint capsule. It is led by an inflammatory reaction within the capsule which causes pain in the shoulder and a progressive loss of joint range of movement commonly into rotation. As the condition worsens the pain can travel down the arm, making it painful to sleep on the affected side. Movement is reduced by the production of scar tissue with causes adherence within the joint reducing extendibility. The condition can be caused by trauma to the shoulder or can simply start on its own and those with Diabetes are at an increased risk. The first signs of the condition are pain specifically in the shoulder especially on movements involving rotation.
