Impingement/Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

Impingement syndrome is a condition affecting the rotator cuff tendons within the shoulder joint which causes pain typically when lifting the arm out to the side (Abduction).

The rotator cuff muscles are the stabilising features of the shoulder joint and occasionally these tendons can undergo specific changes caused by trauma, repetitive stress, biomechanical features or degeneration. This causes an increased tendon diameter essentially pinching the tendons between the acromion and the head of the humerus.

Physiotherapy aims to reduce the pain by addressing the cause of the impingement. This can involve joint mobilisation to the shoulder, neck and/or thoracic spine, soft tissue manipulation to the muscles around the shoulder.
