Mummy MOT®

Who Needs a Mummy MOT® ?

The Postnatal Check You Deserve

Up to half of all women experience weakness in both the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy and up to a third still have a tummy gap at eight weeks post-birth. This can cause instability or poor core strength leading to women developing pelvic or back pain or bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction. These conditions should not be something you should just put up with as a result of having a baby.

It’s recommended that women have an initial assessment after their 6-8 week GP check, but we also treat women who gave birth years ago that may still have a tummy gap or related pelvic floor issues.

About the Mummy MOT®

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and C-section deliveries. It will assess how your posture, pelvic floor muscles and stomach muscles are recovering after childbirth. Your Mummy MOT physiotherapist will provide you with gentle exercises and treatment to help with your recovery – and get you back on track with your fitness goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

I had my baby years ago – can I still have a Mummy MOT®?

Absolutely! The Mummy MOT® is for all women who have given birth and still suffering in some way. The sooner you make an appointment, the sooner your symptoms and issues will be alleviated. However, it is never too late to make an appointment.

Will I be expected to remove my clothes?

The Mummy MOT® may include an internal pelvic examination if deemed necessary by the physio and agreed by you. You will be required to remove the bottom half of your clothing. You will be asked to sign a consent form or give a verbal agreement before the exam takes place.

How long does The Mummy MOT® take?

The initial consultation can take up to an hour. It may take longer depending on your situation and symptoms. Follow up times will be discussed with you.

Can I bring my partner, baby, or a friend with me?

There is a lot to cover during the initial assessment and we like you to relax and concentrate on yourself as much as possible, therefore it is advisable that you come by yourself. However, if you need to bring someone with you, especially if you can’t get someone to look after your little one, we are more than happy to have them join you but please let us know in advance.

I have a question that’s not answered here, can you help?

Absolutely, please contact East Cliff Therapy Centre directly via email or telephone & Alice will be happy to chat with you and answer any questionsContact us
